8. What form can share register fraud take and what should I look out for?

Fraudsters often use persuasive and high-pressure tactics to lure shareholders into scams.  You should be wary of receiving unsolicited phone calls or correspondence offering investment advice, offers to buy shares at a discount or sell shares at a premium, or offers of free company reports.

If you have received unsolicited calls or correspondence about an investment opportunity, the chances are it is a high risk investment or a scam and you should proceed with extreme caution.  If you do not know the source of the call, the safest course of action is to hang up.

You can check a firm is properly authorised by visiting the FCA register of authorised firms at https://www.fca.org.uk/firms/financial-services-register

You should not give out any personal information until you are certain that an opportunity is legitimate and you should consider getting independent financial advice before you hand over any money.

If you have any concerns, you should report the matter to the FCA by either calling 0800 111 6768 or online at www.fca.org.uk/scams.

If you have lost money to investment fraud, you should report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at www.actionfraud.police.uk.
